Automatic gate or garage door not opening: what to check

Most automatic gates and garage doors stop for simple reasons: no power, a flat remote battery, blocked or dirty safety sensors, sand in the track, or a motor left in manual release. Check those first. Leave springs, cables, the control board and the motor to a technician, because they hold tension and mains voltage.

Why has my automatic gate or garage door stopped working?

An automatic gate is a simple machine: a motor, a control board, limit switches that tell it where open and closed are, safety sensors and a remote receiver. When it stops, one of those has lost power, lost its signal or met resistance. The table above matches the usual symptoms to their causes.

Start with what changed. A power cut, a storm, gardeners working near the track, a car that nudged the gate or a new remote can each explain a sudden failure. A gate that has been slowing, straining or stopping short for weeks is wearing out and needs a service.

What can I check safely?

  • Power. Look for a light on the motor or control box. Check the breaker and the isolator switch near the gate, and reset a tripped breaker once only.
  • The remote. Try a second remote and the wall button or keypad. If only one remote fails, change its battery.
  • The safety sensors. Wipe the two small lenses near the bottom of the opening with a soft cloth and remove plants, bins or toys from the beam.
  • The track. On a sliding gate, sweep sand, stones and leaves out of the floor track along its full length.
  • The manual release. Check that the lever or key has not been left in the released position after a power cut.
  • Obstructions. Look for anything jammed under the gate, behind a swing leaf or in the garage door guides.

If none of that restores it, stop there. Note what the gate does and any flashing light on the control box, because the pattern of flashes is often a fault code that a technician can read.

What should I not do myself on a gate or garage door?

  • Do not touch garage door springs, cables or the brackets they attach to. They are wound under heavy tension and can cause serious injury if released.
  • Do not open the control box or the motor cover. They contain mains voltage, and some motors have a capacitor that holds charge after the power is off.
  • Do not bridge, tape over or disconnect the safety sensors to make the gate close.
  • Do not push or pull the gate while the motor is engaged. It strips the gears.
  • Do not grease the floor track. Grease holds sand and turns into a grinding paste.
  • Do not let anyone stand in the path of the gate while you test it, and keep remotes away from children.
  • Do not use a garage door that hangs crooked, feels heavy or drops quickly. Leave it closed and call.

How do heat, sand and humidity affect gates in Dubai?

Sliding gates suffer most from sand. It drifts into the floor track, packs around the rollers and wears the toothed rack that the motor drives. A weekly sweep prevents more breakdowns than any other habit.

Heat is the second factor. Motor housings in direct sun can reach temperatures that trigger the thermal cut out, so a gate may work at breakfast and refuse at three in the afternoon. Long steel gates also expand in the heat and can bind against their posts or guides. Backup batteries lose capacity quickly in hot enclosures.

Humidity and salt air corrode hinges, rollers and terminals, particularly near the coast. Irrigation spray leaves limescale on sensor lenses, and ants and geckos nest in warm control boxes and short the circuit board.

How do I open the gate by hand, and when should I call a technician?

Every gate motor has a manual release, usually a keyed lever on the motor body or a cord on a garage door operator. Find the key today and keep it where everyone in the home can reach it. Release the motor, move the gate by hand, then lock the release again before you use the remote. Only release a garage door when it is fully closed, because a door with a weak spring can fall.

Call a technician if the gate will not move by hand, if it reverses for no reason, if the motor hums without turning, or if you hear grinding. A technician from The MELLS checks the motor, control board, limit settings, safety sensors, rollers and hinges in one visit and tests the safety reversal before leaving. Book a site visit, or call if the gate is stuck open and the property is not secure.

Common questions

How do I open an automatic gate during a power cut?

Use the manual release on the motor, which normally needs a key. Once released, the gate slides or swings by hand. Engage the release again when the power returns. Some systems also have a backup battery that gives a few operations.

How often should an automatic gate be serviced?

Once a year suits most villa gates, and twice a year for gates near the coast or in heavy daily use. The track still needs sweeping every week.

Why does my gate open by itself?

Common causes are a remote button stuck down in a bag or a car, a neighbouring remote on the same code, a timer or auto close setting, or a fault on the control board. Remove the remote batteries one at a time to rule them out.

Can a gate motor be repaired, or must it be replaced?

Many faults are repairable: capacitors, gears, limit switches and control boards can be changed. Replacement makes sense when parts are no longer available or the housing has corroded.
