How we carry out refrigerant leak detection
A unit that needs gas every summer has a leak. Refrigerant does not get used up, so topping up without finding where it escapes only buys a few weeks or months before the room is warm again. Our own AC technicians start with the unit running, reading pressures and temperatures and looking for the usual signs: ice on a pipe, oil staining at a joint, or an indoor coil that never gets properly cold. Then they work along the system with an electronic leak detector, mostly at flare joints, valves and coil bends.
Where the detector picks up a trace, a bubble solution brushed onto the joint shows the exact point. Flare joints that were badly made or have worked loose are the most common source, followed by coils pitted by condensate and salt air near the sea. Once found, the leak is repaired, the system is pressure tested to make sure it holds, then evacuated and recharged to the maker's instructions for that model. If a coil or a pipe run is beyond repair, that is set out in the written quotation before any work goes ahead.
